Synopsis
We join a young woman with bright blue hair living a double life. One side is her university life, having tea on a coffin table with her puppet-maker best friend. The other is collecting and dealing in teeth with her adopted family of monsters in another world.
Review
First off, the titles and covers of these books are stunning, beautiful and incredibly fitting. It made me want to read them immediately and they did not disappoint!
The main character truly kicks ass and is a really powerful figure who transforms and grows throughout the series, as well she should. This is done brilliantly well and can be in obvious turns of events and also done quite subtlety. She shows her strength in different ways. For example, there is a low point for her when she has to bow down to duty but she doesn’t self-pity or fight back in the way you expect. She resigns to it and shows her strength through her selflessness.
Also, the settings and locations within these novels are stunning. They spread from Prague, Rome, Morrocco and the other world Eretz. It really captures and inspires your imagination. There is something about these locations and the way that they are described that makes you believe in the fantastical goings-on in the streets of these places.
The series is not overdone which could easily have been done. I would say that it really brings back the credibility of Young Adult Fantasy. It brings guts and gumption and strong characters that you strive to be like. For me, it makes up for the lack of quality that has been taking up the genre for too long.
The characters climb on up into your heart and settle there. It is a refreshing and well-written trilogy that has been one of my golden secrets for years.
So… I guess the secret is out now…
