The first couple of weeks at the beginning of January have been a ridiculously heavy book buying couple of weeks which I am equally thrilled and ashamed over!! Here is what I got:
The Alloy of Law: A Mistborn Novel by Brendan Sanderson
This is set in the Mistborn world a few centuries after the Mistborn series. The characters we knew are now religious icons and the world has continued to grow. I was feeling extremely nostalgic for the Mistborn world having just finished the series. I was so upset that I had finished it and although the characters are now long gone, I can’t wait to delve into the world once again. Sanderson is an incredible world builder and a review of the original series will be following soon.
A Gathering of Shadows (A Darker Shade of Magic series) by V. E. Schwab
I ADORED A Darker Shade of Magic. It was an incredible read and I flew through it. I really like the relationship between the two main characters and I cannot wait to be witness to their next meeting and adventure! This is a preorder and isn’t out until the end of February… It cannot come quick enough.
The Rook (The Checquy Files) by Daniel O’Malley
This is described as ‘MI5 for wizards’. That’s all I needed to know. I’m really excited about this one. Fantasy and espionage and adventures and magic and wizards. Give it to me!
Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Mass
Throne of Glass is an interesting one for me. I have heard mixed reviews of Sarah J. Mass, one of my friends loves her writing, the other can’t stand it. Despite having a feeling that I will be on the latter side (I have a lot of reading in common with the latter friend), I just needed to give it a go! Watch this space…
Brooklyn by Colm Toibin
This was a book club choice and was originally chosen to coincide with when the film came out. We are a little late in the day to meet up and talk about it. But we will! I’m intriuged about this novel. It is the story of an Irish immigrant moving to New York in the 1950s and the people she meets, the decisions to be made about family at home and such. I also have a feeling that two men come into play, one in America, one in Ireland. But this may just be my imagination!
I Am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes
A book that I have been meaning to read for SO LONG. I haven’t gotten round to it despite the amount of love this has received. But I am ready to correct that. It is a monster of a book but I will hopefully fly through it. I’m really looking forward to delving into this one.
Illuminae: The Illuminae Files Book 1 by Jay Kristoff
This is a book that I was really resisting buying despite what the community has to say about it. It has had incredible reviews and praise yet I was reluctant as the blurb didn’t really sell it to me. It was about a girl who has just broken up with her boyfriend when they are evacuated. It is set in the year 2575 and the main character is left to try and figure out the truth that nobody is saying. But then I bowed to the pressure. As soon as I got it in my hand, I already loved it. Not only is the cover beautiful but the book itself is set out so well! It is set as a set of files with data, images and posters. Truly beautiful. So excited to read this now!! I haven’t read anything like this before.
Authority (The Southern Reach Trilogy) by Jeff VanderMeer
I have recently read Annihilation which was the first in the series (the review will be up next week) and I bought the next in the series. I’m not going to say anything else as it would ruin the review and the book/series. Just suffice to say, I’m very intrigued to read more.
All of these are available at your local bookshop or to order online if any do take your fancy… Now to go and hide from my bank account for a while.
This was something a little different for me, so if you have any feedback do let me know.
